Lisbon's Gluten Free Friendly Restaurants

Hamburgueira Gourmet - Café do Rio

One of my favourites foodie finds in Lisbon was, without a doubt, Hamburgueira Gourmet - Café do Rio. This bun-less burger joint makes fresh and tasty meals using artisanal ingredients that caters to vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets.

The burgers are incredibly healthy and unique, and the concoctions are current and fresh (no pun intended… or perhaps a small pun intended). The recipes are influenced by cuisines from Mexico, India, France, Portugal, amongst others.

The one thing you absolutely must try if you visit is their homemade pesto mayonnaise and ketchup. They are beyond delicious. Who knew fries dipped in pesto mayonnaise was the new It™ food? (Note: it isn’t, but it should be).

Near the Praça do Comércio (The Comércio Plaza), this café is perfectly located for anyone seeking a healthy meal followed by a day of sightseeing around Lisbon’s city centre. The healthy options are scrumptious

Location:
114 Rua da Alfândega

La Trattoria

If you’re looking to treat yourself to a gluten-filled or celiac-friendly boujee™ restaurant meal in Lisbon, look no further than La Trattoria. This dimly-lit but beautifully decorated restaurant delivers on fancy Italian fare that’s safe to indulge for those without or with severe gluten sensitives. The restaurant is certified by the Portuguese Celiac Association and for "Producing Gluten Free Products”.

Apparently, the original restaurant (which began in Madrid) served some famous folk. Think greats such as Ernest Hemingway, Luis Miguel Dominguin, or Ava Gardner.

The real standout for me as a gluten-intolerant individual was the gluten-free bread/ cracker plate. Dipping some of those wonderful breads into the Gratinato di funghi porcini (Wild mushrooms gratin w/ thyme and parmesan cheese) was fantastic.

Location:
179 Rua Artilharia

Order some wine, enjoy the breads, and chat in an establishment fit for Hemingway and many a gluten-free stomach before you!

O Arco

Operating since 1983, O Arco serves up some fresh and hearty portions of fish. They also have meat and cheese dishes if that’s more

Although this restaurant may not be the most elaborate or well-decorated, it’s delicious and large portions of seafood at relatively inexpensive costs make it a great lunch or dinner options for hungry travellers in Lisbon.

There may always be plenty of fish in the sea, but O Arco is a safe bet to choose!

Location:
161, 163 Rua dos Sapateiros
