59 Rivoli - Free Parisian Contemporary Art Gallery & Studio

Paris and art galleries go together like cheese and wine. And I adore cheese with my wine.

However, when thinking of said galleries, one doesn’t often imagine a multi-level building with a graffiti-covered winding staircase, and a number of stark white rooms filled ot the brim with different artistis’ passionate creations.

59 Rivoli is unique.

This particular multi-level gallery and studio space situated in Châtelet is an oasis for inspiring and established artists alike to showcase and continue to cultivate their work. There is always a new reason to visit this unique and innovative space. Out of the 30 studios available, 15 are permanent, and the other 15 are reserved for 3-6 month residencies.

Best of all, it’s completely free to visit!

The space itself used to be a derelict building abandoned for 15 years that a group of artists - named KGB (Kalex, Gaspard, Bruno) - decided to clean up and renovate for themselves.

Despite threat of eviction, the studio & gallery finally became secured after the former mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoê, legalized the area as an art space. Now, 59 Rivoli is among the Top 5 most visited Contemporary Art Galleries in all of Paris - wow!

The location itself is superb, as it’s bang smack in the middle of a busy shopping street in Châtelet on Rue de Riovli. Although there are tons of diverging opinions on whether it’s an eyesore or a sight for sore eyes, I personally really like the juxtaposition of the contemporary space amongst more traditional Parisian architecture along the street.

Even if you don’t like contemporary art, it’s definitely interesting to see the creations these artistic minds offer.

I personally really enjoy the space as it’s a bit more informal than the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain. You really feel immersed inside of the work here, as the art literally surrounds you everywhere you look.

If you’re a fan of graffiti art/ street art/ tags, the staircase features them in abundance. Maybe you’ll be able to spot the work of an up-and-coming sensation! It’s a welcoming area that offers an alternative to those who crave some art, but need a brief reprieve of the onslaught of Impresionnist, Baroque, and Classical art seen in The Louvre and The D’Orsay.

For all lovers of music out there, make sure to check out what concerts they have going on that week, as the gallery becomes a space for musical artists every Saturday and Sunday night.

They also have some artists who offer workshops, so that is worth checking out if you want a unique and creative experience in Paris!

Note: I do not have any photos within the artist’s studio/ gallery space in order to respect the rights of their work.

Here is one of my absolute favourite murals I saw on the wall of the staircase between floors. How amazing!

Pop by, and pick up a unique creation if one strikes your fancy! From a full canvas to a small postfcard, any piece of 59 Rivoli is worth bringing home.
