Hrad Devín - Breathtaking Castle Outside of Bratislava

Whenever people ask me what day-trip is must when visiting Bratislava, without hesitation, I’ll mention Hrad Devín!

Hrad devín - Devín Castle in Bratislava, Slovakia

Devín Castle (as it is known in English) is the historical ruins of a castle located in Devín, a borough of Bratislava.

Originally built in the 8th century, and with further changes up until the 15th-17th century, the castle has undergone a long and arduous history that has left it in its current state. The castle has remained standing despite having been blown-up by Napoleon in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars, and succumbing to Nazi rule during World War II. It has been partially reconstructed after that tumultuous, and it is now open to visitors year-round (except on Mondays).

Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital city, has fantastic vegetation, and this can easily be seen surrounding the castle.

In my opinion, the views and landscape are the real draw to Hrad Devín. Even if you’re not a fan of historical ruins, it’s difficult to remain unmoved by the untouched forests and hills that span as far as the eye can see.

Nestled high atop a steep cliff, the castle offers magnificent views for anyone who chooses to visit. For those who like their medieval trivia, you know this also made it an optimal spot as a strategic vantage point and protective settlement. (Sorry, history buff speaking). I’ll recite myself by continuing on about the aesthetic beauty and Instagram-appeal with some vapid photos:

Posey, posey, posey! It’s nice, eh?

The lush vegetation is superbly highlighted. I was fortunate to visit during an overcast day; look how ethereal it is… wow.

For those who crave views of the Danube in it’s “natural element” outside of the city centre, look no further than this castle. As well, it’s intertwine to not that Hrad Devín bestrides the border between Slovakia and Austria (which is a fantastic day-trip from Bratislava that you can check out by clicking here).

Hrad Devín used to be a completely separated village to Bratislava, which explains its architectural differences to Slovakia’s capital city.

This is definitely a tourist attraction that requires good weather as it is completely outdoors (save for one indoor area of the castle that has a small museum). Do note that this is a very walking intensive attraction - you must walk uphill from the base to reach the top; no cable cars here! The castle itself also has many steps, most of which are old and not always easy on which to step. Bring comfortable shoes! I must say, the views are worth the walk, though.

If you’re spending time in Bratislava, make time to visit Hrad Devín. I found it incredibly magical. It was tranquil, unique, interesting, and it wasn’t bustling with tourists or vendors. I also adored the undisturbed views of the Danube and the surrounding Slovakian landscape. Another bonus was how fresh the air was; this was especially welcome as I had been coming from Paris (cigarette-laden air had become my norm).

A spectacular day-trip, and one I highly recommend!

A windy, but wonderful Slovakian destination!
