matt’s burger lab
For smashing smash burgers, Matt’s Burger Lab is the place to go.
This burger joint is all about keeping things “community-centric” and fresh. The ingredients they use are locally sourced and seasonal when possible, and they even make a point to source their burger buns daily from a local bakery. True to their “mad scientist”-inspired name, some of their burger combinations are rather inventive (ex. a Hawaiian burger with grilled pineapple), but for those with less adventurous tastebuds, classic variations are available.
You can choose from either AAA Strip Loin beef, cage-free poultry, or plant-based burgers. As for those with gluten sensitives, a gluten-free bun is available, and they did make a point to change gloves and clean the surfaces for me when I informed them of my needs! I appreciated that the gluten free option was a sesame bun (pictured below), and while it wasn’t perhaps as fluffy as per my preference, it held it’s shape, and the wonderful flavour of the burger combo I ordered more than made up for it!
As for the vibe, each of their locations is adorned with a mural by local Toronto street art creator Mike Parsons. Grab a burger, sit in, and enjoy!

Ozzy's Burgers Toronto
Tucked away on a quiet side street in Kensington Market is family-run business Ozzy’s Burgers.
Ozzy’s has a reputation of being generous with their portions, and fair in their pricing. I can certainly attest to that! As someone who likes extra sauce, I was very satisfied with my burger.
The staff were very kind, and went beyond simply serving myself and a friend our burgers - they did make a point to inquire about our day which was nice.
There is a gluten-free bun available. While it was a touch dry, the sauce and the generous portion of ingredients inside the bun counteracted that. It also didn’t crumble, which is a plus in my opinion!
For a casual burger, with a side of friendly service, Ozzy’s is a nice location!

the works
Local burger chain The Works offers fully customizable burger options, as well as set items, with multiple locations across the GTA.
For variety and availability, The Works is definitely a great choice for those dining with gluten sensitivities. There are seemingly endless burger options available, from beed, to chicken, and also plant-base options. I also appreciate the abundance of choice when it comes to fries - the homemade chips are really spectacular. The gluten-free bun is good, not great, but I can overlook that given the customization in the burger itself.
For a great burger chain with a local-feel, put in the work and shimmy on over to The Works!
