Fairmont royal york - Clockwork afternoon tea

Note: Only available on weekends.

My go-to Gluten Free High Tea in Toronto is offered at the Fairmont Royal York.

This British high tea is set in an opulent room, bedecked with modern-elegant decor. There are fantastical design elements thoughts (think touches inspired by woodlands, fabergé eggs, and clocks).

The big benefit is the adaptations you can make for any dietary restriction - gluten free, pescatarian, vegetarian, dairy-free, and vegan options are all available if you call or book online ahead of time.

Gluten Free scones, sandwiches, and desserts are always spot-on.

A tea fit for a Queen, and fit for your dietary needs!

Fun fact: Former Queen Elizabeth II has had High Tea at this hotel!

Favourite Tea: Ontario Icewine

100 Front St W, Toronto, ON

Old mill afternoon tea

A scenic and more budget-friendly option for High Tea is available at Old Mill.

The picturesque historic site is perfect for enjoying a relaxing beverages and snacks.

This High Tea has a dedicated allergen friendly menu, and can accommodate those who are Vegan, Gluten Free, and Vegan/ Gluten Free. You simply need to provide 48-hour notice to reserve what you require.

After Queen Tea Shop

A kitschy and charming afternoon tea room can be found just a few minutes north of Toronto in Thornhill. Nestled in an unassuming mall, After Queen is a colourful oasis that plays on a British-meets-Canadian aesthetic theme (note the Toronto stained glass mural).

After Queen is a straight-forward afternoon tea, that gives you all of the standard fare - loose-leaf tea, scones, treats, and sandwiches. One thing I did appreciate was the above and beyond service. My server was phenomenal, and I felt very welcome. Also, it was my birthday, and they welcomed me with a sign outside! How fun!

If you want a less stuffy and more casual option with fun decor, give this a shout.

N.B. There is a steep price difference - $13,00 - between thew ‘regular’ and ‘gluten-free’ (or vegan/ vegetarian/ dairy-free) classic afternoon tea options. While I understand the higher price, it does feel a bit inaccessible!

Favourite Tea: Cream of Earl Grey

Location:
7355 Bayview Ave, Thornhill, ON

windsor arms hotel Afternoon high tea

Another traditional High Tea can be found at the Windsor Arms Hotel.

The Parisian-inspired eggplant-hued (or, aubergine-hued if we’re being proper) tearoom is a classy and chic option fir any admirer of historic spaces.

The Gluten Free High Tea features all the usual trappings - scones with clotted cream and jam, sandwiches, and desserts. While the scones were perhaps a bit more dry than the other options on this list, the rest of the meal was delicious, as were the tea options!

Fun fact: In 1967, actor Richard Burton proposed to Elizabeth Taylor (the second time) by the very fireplace in this room? Inspiration or Fascination? You decide.

Favourite Tea: Russian Caravan

Location:
18 St Thomas St, Toronto, ON M5S 3E7
